Best Beaches in Sao Miguel, Azores.

São Miguel Island is the largest of 9 islands in the Azores archipelago and is known for its natural beauty, including its stunning black sand beaches. Here is a list of some of the best beaches on São Miguel Island:

With a large stretch of coast and perfect surfing waves, Praia de Santa Barbara is one of the liveliest beaches and popular surfing spots on the island. Santa Bárbara Beach is located on the north coast of the island, near the town of Ribeira Grande. Connected to the beach is the popular restaurant & bar TukáTulá where you can enjoy a variety of delicious foods and cocktails while taking in the beauty of the beach. There is also a surf center to sign up for surfing lessons, and there are showers on site.

Possibly my favorite beach on the whole island, Praia Baixa d'Areia is a smaller more secluded beach surrounded by natural beauty with crystal clear waters. It's not as known by tourists yet (and hopefully I don't regret posting about it) but you can get lucky and have a private beach depending on the time you go - it's just an incredible feeling. Note that this beach can only be accessed by walking down quite a bit of stairs - which I think has helped keep it secluded. Trust me when I say it's worth it.

Located just a few kilometers west of Ponta Delgada, this beach is one of the most popular amongst locals and tourists alike, with a long stretch of golden sand, it's a great spot for swimming, sunbathing, and surfing - plus it's a quick drive from the city!

Located on the north coast of the island, lies one of my personal favourite beaches. There's just something special about the natural dome shape created by the high rock cliffs around the ocean that feels so Hygge and comforting! Famous for its black sand and beautiful natural surroundings, it's a popular spot for surfing and bodyboarding. There are showers on site and there are a couple of snack bar cafes nearby.

Praia do Fogo, literally translated to beach of fire is located on the southeastern coast of the island, and is known for its warm waters, thanks to the nearby thermal springs (hence the name of the beach) - making it one of my absolute favourite beaches on the island!

Known for its stunning natural scenery and crystal-clear calm waters surrounded by high cliffs covered in lush vegetation, it's a great spot for swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing, and relaxing. It's monitored by lifeguards all summer long, there are showers, and there is a snack bar on site.

Located on the southeastern coast of the island, 20 minutes from Ponta Delgada, near the town of Vila Franca do Campo lies Praia de Água D'Alto Grande. It's a long stretch of calm, clear waters making it a popular spot for families and great for swimming, windsurfing, and kiteboarding, and offers stunning views of the nearby Ilhéu de Vila Franca.

There are showers and a snack bar on site that offers tasty plates and drinks offering an incredible view of the beach.

Conclusion

There are many beautiful beaches on São Miguel Island and I encourage you to explore them all! No matter which one you choose to visit, you're sure to be impressed by the island's natural beauty and stunning coastline.
